Male Infertility

1. Sperm Production and Function:

  • Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia): Having a lower than normal number of sperm in the ejaculate.
  • Absence of Sperm (Azoospermia): No sperm present in the ejaculate.
  • Poor Sperm Quality: Sperm may have abnormal shapes (morphology) or be unable to move properly (motility).
  • Varicoceles: Enlarged veins in the scrotum can reduce sperm production and quality.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Issues with hormones that regulate sperm production can lead to infertility.

2. Testicular Problems:

  • Undescended Testicles (Cryptorchidism): Testicles that don't descend into the scrotum during development.
  • Testicular Trauma or Injury: Injuries to the testicles can affect sperm production.
  • Infections: Infections like mumps or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can damage the testicles.

3. Genetic Conditions:

  • Klinefelter Syndrome: A genetic disorder where males have an extra X chromosome (XXY).
  • Cystic Fibrosis: A genetic disorder that can affect the reproductive tract.

4. Blockages in the Reproductive Tract:

  • Congenital Absence of the Vas Deferens: A birth defect where the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm) is missing.
  • Retrograde Ejaculation: Semen goes into the bladder instead of out of the body.
  • Post-Vasectomy: Sperm may not be present after vasectomy.

5. Lifestyle and Environmental Factors:

  • Exposure to Heat: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures, like in saunas or hot tubs, can negatively impact sperm production.
  • Poor Diet: Diets high in saturated fats and low in nutrients can affect sperm production.

  • Smoking, Alcohol, and Drug Use: These can reduce sperm quality and quantity.
